Muted Start for Thug Life Despite Massive Hype
Despite high expectations and aggressive promotions, Thug Life is off to a relatively modest start at the box office. As of 7 PM Wednesday, the Mani Ratnam directorial recorded ₹4.93 crore in advance bookings (₹12.32 crore including block seats), selling 2.9 lakh tickets across 10,613 shows.
In comparison, Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 earned ₹10.98 crore (₹17.9 crore with block seats), while Vikram had a much stronger ₹15.30 crore opening. Analysts believe the ban in Karnataka has notably dampened Thug Life's initial momentum.
Thug Life had all the ingredients for greatness — a legendary cast, a celebrated director, and high expectations. But despite its star power, the film falls short of delivering a truly compelling experience. The lack of emotional depth, uninspired character arcs, and a flat screenplay make it a missed opportunity.
Instead of the gripping crime drama fans hoped for, it becomes a slow burn that never quite ignites. Those seeking Mani Ratnam’s signature storytelling may find more satisfaction revisiting his timeless classics.
Mani Ratnam, known for his signature storytelling flair, surprisingly misses the mark this time. The screenplay—co-written with Kamal Haasan—comes across as uneven and sluggish, lacking the rhythm we expect from the duo. Even A.R. Rahman, typically a standout in their collaborations, delivers a soundtrack that underwhelms, with background music that struggles to elevate key moments.
Kamal’s accent feels slightly strained in parts, and the film could have benefited from crisper editing and a tighter runtime. On the plus side, the cinematography holds up well, the production design meets expectations, and the Telugu dubbing is smooth and well-executed.
Despite the much-anticipated Kamal-Mani collaboration, Thug Life stumbles with a thin, predictable storyline that fails to leave a lasting impression. Rather than crafting something fresh and compelling, the film leans heavily on star power and nostalgia, missing the chance to deliver a truly memorable experience.
Though both Kamal and Mani take on screenplay duties, the film surprisingly lacks the sharpness and emotional depth one would expect from such seasoned storytellers. The second half, in particular, drags with a noticeable flatness and uninspired pacing.
Simbu’s character arc is a letdown—starting off promisingly but fading into insignificance without meaningful growth or emotional payoff. This is a glaring missed opportunity, especially given the character’s central role.
Trisha’s presence feels perplexingly underutilized, her character adding little to the narrative and coming across as a mere formality. One wonders if her involvement was driven more by loyalty to Mani Ratnam than narrative necessity.
With its expansive canvas and strong ensemble cast, the film disappointingly sidelines talents like Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and Aishwarya Lekshmi, whose characters barely leave an impact. This underuse is an unexpected misstep from a filmmaker of Mani Ratnam’s caliber.
Abhirami makes the most of her limited screen time, delivering a sincere performance. Nassar shines in select scenes, bringing gravitas to his role. While the rest of the supporting cast may not leave a lasting impression, they serve their parts well and keep the story moving.

Plot-
Thug Life: A Tale of Loyalty, Betrayal, and Redemption
1994:
In the gritty underworld of crime and betrayal, a violent shootout orchestrated by the ruthless Sadanand targets rival kingpin Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan). Amid the chaos, a newspaper delivery man becomes collateral damage, leaving his young children — Amaran (Silambarasan) and Chandra (Aishwarya Lekshmi) — tragically separated. Believing the boy shielded him from harm, Sakthivel, moved by the boy’s courage, takes Amaran under his wing. Alongside his brother Manickam (Nassar), he raises Amaran as his own son within the fold of their criminal empire.
2016:
Decades later, tragedy strikes again. Manickam’s daughter dies by suicide after being deceived by Ranvijay, Sadanand’s cunning nephew. In a swift act of vengeance, Amaran captures Ranvijay, and Sakthivel delivers the fatal blow — a decision that lands him behind bars. With Sakthivel imprisoned, Amaran rises to power as the de facto leader of their vast underworld network.
When Sadanand re-emerges with a surprising peace offering — political retirement in exchange for business territories — Sakthivel, though hesitant, accepts upon his release. As the power dynamics shift, Amaran is recognized as the new face of the empire, a change Sakthivel observes silently during Mangai and Nagai’s wedding.
But peace is short-lived. Sakthivel narrowly escapes an assassination attempt and begins to suspect betrayal from within. His growing distrust leads to a confrontation with Amaran, unsettling the latter. Sensing opportunity, Manickam and others manipulate Amaran by falsely claiming Sakthivel was responsible for his biological father’s death in the 1994 shootout. Blinded by anger and lies, Amaran is drawn into their web of treachery.
In search of solitude, Sakthivel journeys to Mount Kailash — unaware he’s walking into another ambush. This time, Amaran pushes him off a cliff, believing he has finished what others could not.
But Sakthivel survives.
Saved by Tibetan villagers, he disappears for two years, returning colder, quieter, and burning with vengeance. Upon his return, he learns of the chaos that followed: Mangai slapped Manickam upon hearing of Sakthivel’s presumed death and was in turn assaulted. Attempts to report the assault were ignored. She and Jeeva, now suffering from memory loss due to a tragic accident, live in Thrissur under the care of a wounded Sivaguru.
Determined to reunite and protect what’s left of his family, Sakthivel travels to Thrissur. Ambushed once again by henchmen loyal to Amaran and Manickam, he eliminates them all — all but Amaran. His reunion with Mangai is bittersweet, and when he approaches Jeeva, she fails to recognize him, her memory a casualty of the past.
Fuelled by grief and vengeance, Sakthivel reaches out to Indrani for help, but she is killed in a brutal bomb blast orchestrated by Deepak. Injured while trying to save her, Sakthivel is rescued by Inspector Jai Royappa and taken into hiding to recover. There, he is treated by Dr. Chandra — the long-lost sister of Amaran, separated since the events of 1994.
Everything comes full circle as Sakthivel calls Amaran to the site of the original shootout. A fierce battle unfolds between the two men — mentor and protégé, father and son in all but blood. As tensions ease and Amaran prepares to reunite with his sister, tragedy strikes: Deepak reappears and fires. Sakthivel, in one final act of love, takes the bullet for Amaran.
But the damage is done. Despite Sakthivel’s sacrifice, Amaran succumbs to his injuries. Grieving, Sakthivel reflects on a life steeped in loss — his mother at birth, his brother to betrayal, and now Amaran, the son he raised and lost.
In the film’s poignant final scene, Sakthivel is seen working the land, far from the violence of his past. Jeeva and Mangai now live peacefully in a quiet village, raising Mangai’s son — affectionately named Jr. Sakthivel. As Jeeva lovingly calls the child, “Dei Sakthivel,” the legacy of the man once feared as a don finds new life in a name spoken with love.
